He's very cute! I like his coloring, though I'm with everyone else here - not quite sure what to call it. He looks very Aussie to me though.

Have you rescued him from the shelter?

We are evaluating him this weekend for foster care. He has not yet been pulled from the shelter.

I agree with your corrections about him not being a red merle due to the act that he has black leather. I was only looking at the coast color. Now that I stop and think though, it seems like some sort of mix between sable and brindle.

Also agree with labeling the dog as a brindle. It is a "rare-er" coat color in Aussies, but the average Joe would know what a brindle is.

His base color was also black, so that would have also given away the fact that he was not a red merle.

Hello-

When I was taking vet assistance training, I had to do a research paper on a dog breed. I asked for and was given permission to do a paper on the history of a dog breed rather than just a description of a breed and, although my own dog at the time was red-tri Aussie (my current dog is a black-tri Aussie), I chose to research on the Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog. Interestingly, I found links between the Catahoula and the Aussie Shepherd. This sable/black Aussie looks very much in colour like a Catahoula.

Welcome! Interesting. I have seen some Aussie Catahoula mixes online as puppies and wondered what they might look like as adults.

Please tell us more about your Aussie! We love pictures (see how to post in Community section).

Turns out that background is referred to as seal. The merle is a seperate gene.
