Docked tail located at Gwinnett County Animal Control in Lawrenceville GA. Dog friendly and sweet boy.

Any opinions on what exactly this coloration would be referred to as?

Could be sable, could be brindle. We can't really tell without seeing the hairs up close.

As to the color, it looks like a muddy merle in extreme. Sometimes the agouti gene doesn't restrict the phaeomelanin pigment and it pops up in odd places, in this case every place that there isn't the black base color. If the tips of his merle have dark tips, he would be considered sable. As Sally mentioned, he could also be Brindle combined with Merle. Both can occur in one dog, but Brindle is so rare as to have never have been recorded in the breed in my life time. That's not to say it isn't here, just that I have never recorded it in a dog of known heritage.

Can I have authorization to add these photos to my color collection?

Although not typey in appearance, I personally see no physical attributes that jump out and indicate that this dog isn't an Aussie.

The more I look at this, the more I think this dog may be a Merled Brindle.

Here is a page of Border Collies with Brindle (no merles)
http://www.gis.net/~shepdog/BC_Museum/Permanent/BCColors_Brindle/BC_ColorBrindle.html

If you scroll down, there is a Cardigan Welsh Corgi who is a brindle merle at the bottom of the page:

This is a great website that has all sorts of information on standard and non-standard colors. I have linked the specific webpage that has information on "sables" but I suggest you look at the red merles and brindle web pages as well. Where are many types of Red merles, with white, with out white etc. So it could be a red merle.....just an odd one.

Popperjammie, this dog can not be a red merle as it has black pigment. Red dogs never have black pigment. This is a black dog with either the merle gene, the brindle gene, a combination of both.

Hi Jamie,

Welcome to the Board.

That is not a red. Reds have liver lips and nose, where this dogs leather is black. Indicating that his coat base is black unless he is sable or otherwise affected by a modifier or similar - such as brindle.

We have a good thread about this, i'll find it. :)

Shelly, you may absolutely use his photos. I visited the ashgi site and he looked a lot like the sable Aussie pictured there.

I've seen a couple of dogs with this coloration. Seems far fetched to me someone would dock a mixed breed's tail, but stranger things have certainly happened.

I am by no means no expert, but his coat, carriage and expression do seem pretty close to Aussie to me. We are not purists in our group, we do take mixes too; but wanted some opinions too if we pull him and what to "call" him as far as coloring goes. Blue merle or sable merle or just an Aussie mix.

I think you'd be safer calling him a sable merle for the following reason:

You will get TONS of emails from people saying he is not Blue merle (as he is atypical at best) and you have better things to do with your time.

Besides the sable attribute gives the opportunity to lead into some breed education and sort out the crazy people.

Unless his coat hairs are tipped with darker pigment, he isn't a sable Merle. Just note that he is a Merle. Calling him a sable Merle or Merle with Brindle is only going to confuse most adopters.
